Who was Govinda in Indian ancient Indian mythology ?

Here is an extract about how Krishna became known as Govinda .

Govinda and Gopala are the names of Vishnu which mean cowherd and protector of cows  . These names are also popularly addressed to Krishna referring to his youthful activity as a cowherd boy . Govinda means Lord to the Cows . Govinda refers to Lord Balaji , and this name is related to Lord Krishna the Avatar .

One day Lord Krishna tells the people residing in Vrindavan, that there is no need to worship Indra. Following Krishna’s instructions, the people stop praying to Lord Indra. Lord Indra gets agitated over this, and plans to teach the people a lesson. So, Lord Indra showers with heavy rain, with its effects the village starts to completely drown in water and all the trees get uprooted. The people and all animals run in panic for safety . Then Lord Krishna , to save the Villagers and all the cows , lifts the Govardhan mountain and provides shelter to the entire villagers and the cows under the hill.

Seeing this incident , Lord Indra feels ashamed of himself and goes to Krishna and says “ Hey Lord Krishna ! I’m so sorry for the destruction I have caused. Please forgive me. I’m Indra , Lord to the Devas , but you are Lord to everyone and even to the Cows.

So from today onwards , all will refer to you as Govinda , the Lord for everyone and even Cows.”
